MemEOL Assessment Criteria

The MemEoL tool uses simple, non-overlapping, criteria to assess the performance of the end-of-life alternatives for the used membranes[1]. The criteria have been selected to reflect parameters significant to the user, and that facilitate comprehensive and meaningful assessment of the end-of-life options, based on the goals of the tool. These criteria include:
- Environmental Impact – A measurement of the end-of-life scenarios burden on climate change, resource depletion and human health, based on a detailed comparative life cycle assessment[2].
- Landfill Impact – A measurement of the amount of waste that the end-of-life scenario sends to landfill.
- Financial Impact – A justified qualitative assessment, based on the cost or return for each end-of-life option.
- Project Complexity – A qualitative assessment of the amount of organisational time and resources required.
- Public Perception – A qualitative measurement of the general acceptance of the various waste management options. This includes the general public view of the social and environmental impacts, as well as the impact on local communities and job creation. This is an important consideration for membrane users as a positive public perception can simplify the implementation of large scale projects and increase the company reputation.
